noticed an interesting thing with the CCTLD portfolios I create by new
registrations – suddenly sales are bringing in a “noticeable” part of the
portfolio’s revenue. When it comes to the cctld portfolios, this sales element
is about 15% of the revenue (the remaining 85% coming from PPC).

can’t really find a reason to why. Otherwise when it comes to ccltds I’ve been
much more active with them recently. Since I’ve sort of overharvested the .com
universe and ROI has been worsening there, I’ve been looking for other TLDs
where ROI is better. So last year I did a lot in .nl, .se., .de, .co.uk, .it,
.be, .com.mx, .ca, .com.br, .pl etc. Recently I’ve gone so exotic as to play
around with .jp or .co.nz. Now I have several CCTLDs but I think I’ve
depleted them quite a bit as well.

One of my domains expired about 59 days ago but I had failed to renew it in time. To make a long story short, I had planned to renew it this weekend at a higher cost knowing only too well that I should still have the chance to get it back during the 30 day redemption period only to find out these baboons had auctioned my domain two weeks ago. Now the domain was auctioned without my knowledge. How did they know that they I had no claims to my domain? I can see they sent some reminders in quick succession a few days before the auction as a justification that I had no claim. When I inquired, this is the response I get from a guy called Israel:

It is “boom boom” time for the Angolan economy but has this fast growth influenced the growth in the registration of Angolan domains? It is hard to tell at this time. The Angolan ccTLD registry for the .AO domains has a good technical foundation but the domains are fairly overpriced. The last time I checked, registering a .AO domain could set you back over $250 or thereabouts per year. Yet those who live in Angola are a not surprised. They are more or less used to paying the eye wateringly expensive prices for just about anything. A good accommodation in a good hotel in Angolan capital of Luanda costs between $400 to $600 per night. An “average” lunch in Luanda goes for about $70. A good dinner can go for as much as $100 while a 500ml soda costs anywhere from $8 to $10. The Angolan capital Luanda is the second most expensive city in the world after Tokyo. So why should the domains be cheap?

I think given the relatively tiny size of the Angolan middle class and the very few internet entrepreneurs coupled with a small or nonexistent SME sector, domains do not make much sense for the vast majority of the Angolan people. Like everything else that is costly in Luanda, it is the multinationals and the small Angolan middle class who can afford such costs. So I don’t think we can expect to see Angolan domainers soon. But there are opportunities for those interested in developing content targeting the Angolan market.

For example, most of the information about Angola is in Portuguese and there is very little Angolan content on the web in English apart from the usual boring stuff about the President’s daughter and the Angolan economic boom. Given the boom in real estate and investments and the stream of high networth individuals that are currently developing an interest in the former war torn country turned an African economic powerhouse, there are lots of interesting niches that could prove profitable. Of course they will have to be developed on .COM domains, no one will spend an upwards of $250 purchasing .AO domains. So here are good prospects:

The Futurlec Electronic Components Scam is run from Australia
Here is another scam-busting blog post. Futurlec Electronic Components and Semiconductor Superstore is supposedly an electronic components supplier, with a “superstore” that at face value is every engineer’s dream. You can find and purchase virtually every electronics components that you might need for your project. They even offer “PCB Manufacturing” services to clients, mostly engineering students running against time to complete their projects. The shopping process is relatively straightforward. Even the billing is perfect. You can add components ranging from SMT surface mount devices to printed circuit boards in a matter of minutes. The pricing is also perfect; they charge almost 50%of what other online electronics component stores charge. But that is where it ends. It is all a scam.

I was hit with the Futurelec scam sometime back when I was doing my final year engineering project. I had prepared my project proposal and designed the required circuits. All that I needed were the components to complete my assembly. Of course back then I had not mastered the practice of reading reviews about online stores. Because the Futurlec scam website is highly search engine optimized, you are likely to land there if you are searching for any electronics components for your project. So that is how I landed at the website and lost my over $100 and almost got disqualified. A friend of mine lost over $200 and there are hundreds of engineering students around the world who are still losing money to the Futurlec scam as we speak.

So who is behind the Futurlec Scam?
As someone who deals with domains, one of the best ways use to find people involved in scamming others is to look at the WHOIS information of the domain they use for their website. If there is no WHOIS privacy for the domain, the names under which the domain is registered are usually the owners of the business. Why else would I let someone register the domain for my business under their name. So from the WHOIS information of Futurlec.com, the domain was registered by the following people:

Alan Bonnard based in 2/136 Broadmeadow Road, New South Wales Australia Tel: +61 249623231

Dominic Main based in Chippendale, New South West Australia, P.O. Box 270 Chippendale

The domain is registered under the email sales@futurlec.com i.e. Alan Bonnard

Australian Alan Bonnard is also the company’s “Sales Manager”.

Additional Details on the Futurlec.com Scam
They claim to source the electronics components from the Asian region from where they dropship them to global clientele. Their website also includes contact details for clients in North America, Middle East and Europe. Of course all these are part of an elaborate scam. Ask people like us who have dealt with these crooks and seen our money disappear into thin air.

So next time you are buying electronic components or looking for reliable PCB manufacturers and you see Futurlec.com website appearing at the top of the SERPs, please ignore. This is one of the most enduring scams that has fleeced thousands of engineering students trying to buy electronic components online.
Well, this is very dismal. Out of the Top 10,000 websites by Alexa rank, only 33 are hosted in Africa with the majority of them in South Africa, Egypt and Seychelles. For some, the figures look optimistic given Africa's poorly developed webhosting infrastructure and the fact that many of the "hosters" in Africa are simply resellers of much bigger webhosting companies in the developed world. In Kenya, true Kenyan hosting is still relatively costly, and many people prefer the global marketplace which has very attractive offers. The growth of indigenous hosting, particularly for high traffic websites, will certainly spur growth of internet in Africa and create additional jobs in the industry. I think the onus is on African hosters to be innovative come up with a better product that sells and can draw consumers away from the BlueHost, 1&1 or HostMonster.
I sort of got curious about the new gTLD application from Gambia for a few reasons. For one, Gambia is a relatively small African nation with a population of just 1.7 million but with a vibrant internet community including ISOC Society and IGFs. You are likely to find a lot of Gambians active in global internet circles, key amongst them was the former ICANN Board member Katim Touray who is also spearheading this new gTLD application.

So what is .Ummah all about?
Ummah is a term more familiar to Muslims and can loosely be translated to an Islamic Commonwealth. In "Christianspeak", it would refer to "Christendom". This new gTLD application is therefore targeted at the entire Muslim Commonwealth, or Muslim nations with population totaling 1.6 billion. A gTLD for 1.6 billion people is definitely something. According to the dotUmmah ICANN Application:

The .ummah gTLD will finally provide Muslims and Islamic organizations a means to translate to the Internet, the Muslim identity that has been used since the birth of Islam about 1,400 years ago. Beyond that, .ummah will also provide a much-needed choice that will help them build their sense of community, and build bridges between the Islamic and non-Islamic world. Internet users will thus be able to find Islamic organizations, institutions, government agencies, businesses much easier with .ummah than without it. In the same vein, non-Islamic entities will find .ummah domain names an effective route to reaching their target audiences in the Islamic world.

Ummah Registry will use COCCA Registry Services as its Registry backend services provider and the application is Standard. There is another application for .Islam(dotIslam) by a Turkish Applicant that targets the same demographic.

With Africa's internet giants such as Nigeria, Kenya, Morocco, Uganda, Tunisia, Algeria not adequately represented in this new gTLD round, Gambia has certainly done well. The poor representation of Africa is a bit disappointing given that opportunities like Applicant Support Programs which could have supported a myriad of African new gTLD applications have gone to waste. Anyway, good luck to Katim and team.
The New gTLD "Reveal" has finally come to pass and though it is nice to see some representation from Africa, it is still a drop in the ocean compared to the total number of applications submitted. There are 4 applicants from Africa applying for some 15 new gTLD strings altogether. {It was reported that there are 17 new gTLD strings from the Africa Region but I can only trace 15, so let me know if I did not factor in other strings.}

Out of the 15 African gTLDs, 9 are .brand(dotbrand), 1 is community(dotarab), and 5 are geographic including 3 .city(dotcity) gTLD strings for Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

Compared to the 1930 gTLD strings being applied for, this is definitely a drop in the nation and perpetuates our history of being the "outsiders" in the internet business. I'm also shocked that while African internet representatives vehemently lobbied for the reduction of application fee to $47,000 in order to benefit applicants from the region applying for certain classes of gTLD strings, not a single one has emerged to take advantage of the vastly reduced application fee. There are certainly lots of missed opportunities for Africa in this new gTLD application round.

For example big cities like Lagos, Cairo, Rabat, Tunis, Nairobi could have had .city new gTLDs. Some communities in Africa could have created internet namespaces to brand their cultures, businesses and much more. For example, a .somali(dotSomali) could make a lot of sense given the Somali people's unique culture, language and the fact that they don't have a viable nation and are spread all over the world.

Regional blocs like ECOWAS, COMESA, SADC and EAC could have done with internet addresses for official use in branding their agencies and online profiles. The African Airlines Association and .afraa(dotafraa)? Or maybe everything will fall under dotafrica Top Level Domain name? Even the African Union should have applied for a gTLD, .AUC(dotAUC) to host its online content given that it is quickly growing into a super bureaucracy.

Anyway, the idea of .africa(dotafrica) sounds pretty exciting and I can't wait for my .africa domain!

So which are the strings applied for by African organizations?
Binary Options analysis provides a way for professional and novice investors to study market trends in order to make more accurate predictions on the direction of the price of the underlying stock. There are generally two ways to carry out analysis and they include fundamental analysis and technical analysis.

Fundamental Analysis
This generally has to do with the outside factors that are impacting the pricing of the underlying security. The market variables including commodities, stock, currency and indices are easily affected by various global events including natural calamities, management changes, politics, war, terrorism, foreign policy decisions and even small conflicts. These factors do influence the market momentum and every savvy investor must monitor them in order to make the right prediction on the direction of prices,
Then there is the option of technical analysis which relies on historical data in order to determine the future trends or behavior of a particular underlying security. As an investor, there are various technical binary options analysis tools that you can use to follow market trends and determine future pricing.

Technical Analysis
The simplest method to carry out technical binary options analysis is through the process of means revision. This process simply involves the mean in the price if the security and then using this to determine which direction the asset will move. Securities always gravitate towards a certain mean although they might have upward or downward movement.
There are more complex technical analysis methods such as the use of Moving Averages Convergence-Divergence or MACD. MACD analysis involves will generally give an indication of the momentum of an asset, telling you whether the asset is on an upward or downward momentum. MACD normally involves the plotting of the “MACD line” by employing a zero line, two moving averages and a histogram. The moving averages will involve the use of short term averages and long term averages. Where the short term averages are greater than the plotted long term averages, then the underlying security is said to be on an upward trend and can hence be purchased by the investor. Investors use MACD analysis in analyzing various securities in the market and they are just as useful in binary options analysis. These technical analysis methods make use of the historical data of the underlying stock in order to determine trends. Following past price trends will help predict future trends enabling you to make more accurate price predictions.
Another binary options technical analysis method that can be employed by investors is pattern return technique. This is a complicated technique that involves investors working to establish patterns in particular underlying security. The patterns that have been determined will help investors in choosing the binary options that represent assets on an upward trend.

Charts
Charts provide an effective way in binary options analysis by helping investors in choosing the best options to invest in based on the visual representation on historical performance of the price of the underlying asset. There several charts that an investor can use to evaluate the momentum or trend of an asset including bar charts, line charts and candle charts.
Bar Charts
Bar charts are technical analysis tools used by many financial analysts to represent the daily performance of a particular security. The bar charts are simply a vertical line that will represent the lowest price of the day, opening price, closing price and the highest price of the day. They are useful technical tools for binary options analysis and are used by many investors.

Line charts
The line charts make use of data points that are plotted from the movement of the pricing of the underlying security at certain points with of the points connected by a line graph. For beginners in binary options analysis, line charts provide some of the simplest modes for the representation of trends and can help in making decisions fairly fast. However, because they are plotted over discrete points, line charts may not be reliable especially in situations where you are involved in hourly options trading.

Candle charts
A candlestick chart refers to a chart that is used in investments to represent price movement in particular day based on the emotions of the market. It is a technique that was invented in the 1700s by a Japanese trader and is widely used in trading futures. It involves representation of the lowest price of the day, open or closing price, and the body whose color can vary from red to black based on how the stock market closes.

Binary options trading is a high turnover trade with very high returns if you are on a winning streak. An investor can either be in the money or out of the money. For some, it can be like a lottery, with no way of predicting how many times you will be in the money. Before buying any option, it is important to have a binary options strategy that will guide your investment goals. Having a good strategy nit only ensures you make profits most of the times but also ensures you can cut your losses when you are on a losing streak.
Binary options strategy allows for the prediction of outcome. When you are planning to trade hourly expiring options for example, having the best binary options strategy is important in achieving success in a more consistent manner. It is like your investment formula. Every top investor has a winning strategy that they develop over time in the market.

There are people who trade in futures and they are in the money most of the time; there are others who are out of the money most of the time in spite of the fact they have a good understanding of the futures market. The difference comes due to the difference in strategies adopted by each investor.
There are various kinds of binary options strategy that an investor can adopt in order to improve their odds of being in the money most of the times: covering call or put options strategies, purchasing puts and calls strategies, doubling options, bullish strategy, range volatility trending and money management.

Covered Call Options
Covered call options is a very popular binary options strategy that is employed by investors simply to cover their back when they are uncertain of the short term prospects of the options. In covered call options, the investors buys a long term hold option for the underlying security while also placing a short term call option for the same security just in case the underlying assets moves upwards thus enabling them to generate profits. In investment jargon, this option is normally referred to as “buy-write” option.

Range volatility trending
This binary options strategy is used were the prices of the underlying security are changing too fast and unpredictably. Range and volatility strategies are employed by investors who have already developed some experience in options trading although new investors can also take advantage of them. They are advanced forms of options strategies that determine how a stock will move based on oscillations in the pricing of an underlying stock. Range option is used in instances where an asset class does not show any signs of moving in any definite direction but “oscillates” around a range. Investors can buy “IN” the range and make money when the price of the underlying security is OUT of the range. Range trading is popular strategy employed by investors to make money in options trading.

Put Option
Put option is binary options strategy that employs hedging to protect the investor from huge losses in the market. Most investors will purchase put options when there is a strong indication that the prices will fall. By purchasing the put option, an investor will be assured of a predetermined payout the when the prices of the underlying security do not touch the strike prices after a specified time frame.

Bullish strategy
This mode of binary options strategy involves an investor doing analysis of the market using the various analysis tools including fundamental analysis and technical analysis strategies to determine if the market is on upward trend. After performing the analysis, the investor exercises their call option on the prediction that they have made using some of the analysis tools and buys the options contract that will give the maximum returns in the coming hours.

Money management
A critical part of your binary options strategy when trading is knowing how your money is moving. In the money management strategy. Binary options trading can sometimes involve considerable loss of money die to the all or nothing nature of the game. In order to keep trading, you need to keep a tab on how much funds you have at all time and one strategy that investors in options utilize is that of money management. An important money management technique that is often employed as a binary options strategy involves limiting the value per trade to a certain percentage of thee remaining capital. Most traders will recommend the percentage for you but it can vary from 7-9% of your remaining capital. Money management allows you to cut down your losses and remain in the game for a log while the market picks up. It also advisable for traders having an unlucky run to remove some money from their trading account when they are having an unlucky run in order to eliminate the temptation to revert to big trades.

Online Investments in Binary Options Tips
While traditional trading in stock, indices and commodities will rely on the volatility of the market to make the most profits, binary trading however relies on the price which will determine whether you will get a predetermined profit or a “predetermined loss”. For example, a binary trader will make the same profit irrespective of whether there is a 2% or 20% increase in the price of the underlying security whether it is stock, Forex, indices or commodities. This makes market volatility almost irrelevant and timing of trading the most relevant factor that traders must put into consideration. As a result, the best time to trade binary options is something that is often uppermost on most traders’ minds.

But what is the best time trade binary options? For experienced traders, timing is a factor but not necessarily the most important factor since knowledgeable binary options traders use a set of data and predictive tools to determine the price direction on any particular day. This gives them a versatile set of tools and data on which to rely on. For investors and new newcomers in this type of investments, information on the best time to trade binary options will be hugely useful in avoiding losses associated with trading during volatile and unpredictable periods in the market.

There are two ways in which you can determine the best time to trade binary options. The first method often involves the timing that is broadly based on trading hours and trading days and the second option involves timing based on the types of the underlying securities such as stocks, currencies, commodities and indices.

Timing-based Trading Hours and Days
For new traders, certain hours are generally considered the best time to trade binary options while some hours are generally considered to be fraught with lots of risks. For example, it is generally not advisable to trade binary options during the first 30 minutes after the opening of the market so as to allow the prices of the underlying security to settle. Likewise, trading in the closing hours might not be advisable for a newcomer or trader due to the fact that the behavior of the market at this time is quite volatile. It is therefore often broadly advisable to trade your hourly expiring binary options in between these hours when you can determine the price direction confidently.

When it comes to daily expiring binary options, the best time to trade binary options is normally in between Monday and Friday. Monday morning is often highly volatile and it will be hard for you to get a clear price direction in order to make a profit on your binary options. Likewise, Friday afternoon is also not the best time to trade binary options due to market volatility which will make it difficult to

Timing based on the Types of the Underlying Securities.
Binary options prices are often derived from certain underlying stock, forex or commodity prices. It is therefore possible for you to maximize the profits at certain times in which these markets have heightened activities. Determining opening and closing hours of the various currency, stock and commodity markets is therefore important in helping you determine the best time to trade binary options in these markets.

If your binary options are based on stock, it will be important for you to understand the trading hours of the major global stock markets including the NADAQ, London’s FTSE, and Frankfurt’s DAX amongst other major markets in Europe in order to determine the best time to trade binary options in those markets. The US stock markets will open at 9.30am EST and closes at 4pm EST. The London FTSE opens at 0700UTC and closes at 1530UTC while Frankfurt’s DAX opens at 0800UTC and closes at 1630UTC. Knowing the opening and closing times will help you in determining the periods when the market is abuzz with activity and at its most volatile.

When your binary options are based on currencies, then you need to understand the best time to trade binary options in the currency markets. This should be the time when the currency markets are normally abuzz with the most activity and thus there is volatility in the market. The key timelines to monitor here are the Tokyo, New York, Sydney and London. Currencies markets are normally abuzz during overlaps in the London/Asian time which is from 0300am to 0400am EST and London/New York time which is from 0800am to 12 noon EST.

For commodity prices, the best time to trade binary options derivatives is by evaluating the best time for mot activity in these markets. Some of the markets that you will evaluate the Crude Oil(opening from 9am to 2.30pm EST), natural gas(9am to 5.30pm EST), corn(opening at 9.30am and closing 1.5pm EST), gold(opening at 8.20am and closing at 5.15pm EST) and silver(8.25am to 5.15pm EST).

For index binary options, the best time to trade binary options coincides with US time s for opening and closing the US stock markets including NASDAQ, S&P500 from 0930am to 1630pm EST. You may also evaluate the timing of other global markets in Europe to determine the best time to trade binary options.
Experienced traders will have varied tools to rely on in predicting the direction of prices and may not necessarily be compelled to adhere to this strict timing regime.

Online Investment Guide: Learn More About Investments in Binary Options
Beginners always look for term “101” in order to order to understand the basic information about any industry. This binary options 101 is a beginner’s guide into the binary options industry providing newcomers into this field with basic information on a “best efforts” basis to help them quickly grasp the intricacies involved in this industry and set them on an exciting path to superb profits.

What Are Binary Options?
Binary options are also called digital options and simply refer to a type of investment that can have only two outcomes for the investor: being in the money or out of the money. It is a financial derivative which means its value does not represent the price of an actual asset. Instead the binary options are “derived” from the price of an underlying security. In the financial markets, these securities will include stock, forex, commodities and indices. As an investor in this industry, you will therefore be presented with the option of placing your bets on stock options, forex options, commodity options and index options.
It is one of the simplest modes of investments. All an investor has to do is predict the price direction of any of these underlying securities within a certain time frame. If they get it right, then the investors are said to be in the money and will get very handsome payouts. If they get it wrong, then an investor is out of the money and will be refunded a tiny payout. It is analogous to the digital world where signals can either have predetermined “1” or “0” values hence the names “digital options”. While many beginners may equate this to gambling, it is smart gambling as you have the opportunity of evaluating the performance of the security before buying your option. These options will expire at a predetermined time upon which you can exercise your discretion to cash in.

Markets
One of the things that you will need to do as an investor is choosing the appropriate binary options market to trade in. Depending on the types of options that you choose, there are several markets that you can now invest in. The markets offer the options of stock, indices, commodities and currencies. Investors in stock and currency have the option of investing in London’s FTSE, Germany’s DAX and the NYSE. If you are planning to invest in index options, then you have markets such as FTSE 100, CAC 40, DAX 30, Dow Jones, NASDAQ and S&P500 to invest in. Commodity options are available for commodities such as gold, silver, crude oil, wheat, heating oil, sugar, soybeans, coffee, cotton, natural gas or gasoline. As an investor, you may choose any of these options in particular global markets in London, New York, Sidney, Tokyo or Berlin.

Types of Binary Options
There are many types of binary options that you could invest in. This binary options 101 will show you the clear choices that you have to make when trading in options. Investing in this field will present you with four types of options: one touch, no touch, double one touch and double no touch. There however exist some other modes of classifications.
The one touch option involves the trader placing a “trigger” by defining the rate at which they will get a payout if the underlying asset price touches their trigger or defined price. Under this option, the trader is clearly aware that they will make a profit or a loss based on the trend of the pricing of the underlying asset.
In the no touch option, the trader defines a target and they will get paid if the price of the underlying asset does not touch the target price. In the double one touch option, traders will define two triggers in the pricing of the underlying asset and make profits if any of these predefined triggers are touched by the price movement of the underlying security.
The fourth type of binary options is called double no touch option and simply represents the opposite o the double one touch option. The trader will define two options and make money if neither of those options is touched by the pricing movement of the underlying asset.

Advantages of Binary Options
Binary options trading has many advantages including lower threshold for entry, higher payout rates, simplified trading process and the opportunity to trade in global markets. Besides, traders can easily carry out their trading with the click of a mouse.
With as little as $30, investors can easily begin trading in the futures. The threshold typically varies from one platform to another and it is important to evaluate what each offers. Some platforms have a threshold of $100 while others have much lower thresholds.
The payout rates are quite high and will vary from 60% to 500% in some platforms when you are in the money. This makes it one of the most lucrative forms of investments available in the financial markets. Besides, when you are out of the money, certain platforms will offer you a refund payout that varies from 10-20% ensuring that you have a soft landing on your unlucky days.
Binary options also give you the opportunity to become a global player and invest in multiple global markets across multiple time zones. In the age of the internet, binary options provide the best ways to invest in the global markets from the comfort of your laptop!

To begin with, many African domain registrars/ISPs will offer domain registrations for their country's ccTLD, several popular gTLDs like .com, .net, .org, .info and some of the popular rebranded ccTLDs like .me .tv .ws. .fm .am It's hard to buy gTLDs like .travel .coop .pro from an African domain reseller/registrar. I think this can be attributed to the fact that many African registrars are actually domain resellers of other global players that are ICANN Accredited. As a result, they can only resell what's available with their suppliers(ICANN Accredited registrars). This lack of flexibility naturally inhibits their capability to offer consumers a wider roster of domain names. Besides, the cost of getting accredited across multiple ccTLDs in Africa is too high for an African ISP.

A good opportunity is in offering local presence services, but for registrants still costly
Since many African ccTLD registries are closed, many registrars offer a local presence service to register domains on behalf of their international clientele and hold it in trust. The local presence service providers will be the administrative, technical and billing contact. In some cases, firms can also contract a law firm to provide this kind of service. So you can imagine the difficulty and cost in setting up such local presence in 20 or more African countries in order to reserve the various ccTLD domains and at the same time put them under a single management!

It's fairly easy to get accredited in countries like Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, Malawi if you have the resources, but lack of resources is a factor which I think might have hindered many African registrars with Pan African dreams. Many of the registrars that now offer a "one stop" shop for African ccTLDs are mostly companies that are not African and the domains are very costly amongst those retailers. I think a way forward would be for African registrars to build cross border partnerships with each other and cross sell domains across various registrars' platforms. This way, African registrars can dominate the ccTLD marketplace by offering registrants variety and competitive pricing thereby not losing out to international registrars who are now encroaching onto their territory after reducing them to "mere" domain resellers in the gTLD marketplace.

Some registrars retailing African ccTLD Domains:
101Domain: Offers Domain Registration for all the countries and territories of Africa except South Sudan(yet to be launched). Costly
Marcaria: Offers up to 40 African ccTLDs. Costly.
Africa Registry: Offers up to 16 African ccTLDs. Quite costly
Instra Corporation: Offers Domain Registration for 13 popular African ccTLDs. Costly.
Lexsynergy: Offers local presence service across multiple African ccTLDs
OpenSRS:Offers up to 8 African ccTLDs now sold via its giant reseller network.
Most of these domains were registered by businesses, organizations and other entities and might not necessarily be of interest for those registering domains for speculative purposes who generally prefer generic keyword domains. All in all, I think this is a great step taken by KENIC and hopefully it would stimulate some interest in the Kenyan domain marketplace and drive up registrations. Seems to me some Kenyan companies also forget to renew their domains. Here is a list of recently deleted domains:
But for the moment, this opportunity can only be realized by a handful of the most innovative and forward-looking metros, such as .berlin, .london, .nyc, .tokyo and – if our leaders have the vision to join this exclusive club – .capetown.

dotCapetown

For a limited time, until mid-April 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – which manages the registration of top-level domains (TLDs) – is accepting applications for new TLDs. Once the deadline has passed, it is not expected to open up the process again for many years.

I believe that the City of Cape Town should take this opportunity to spearhead the application for the .capetown domain. A successful bid will lead to significant branding, community-building and economic opportunities for the city, its businesses and its residents.

As a branding device, the early adoption of the .capetown domain would signal our claim to being a world class city. It would also say that we’re a cutting-edge creative hub of digital innovation and a uniquely worthwhile destination. These qualities would help the city compete for travelers, conferences, foreign direct investment and international knowledge workers. It would also add to the city’s growing brand profile, revealing that we are aware of our own value and are keen to enhance it.

The world is starting to wake up to the Cape Town brand as more films are shot here, more tourists visit and as we host more international events. Initiatives like the Silicon Cape, the World Design Capital and the Cape Biotech Initiative are all enhancing the city’s brand as well.

Unfortunately, everything online about the city falls under the .za domain, a suffix that has none of the branding benefits that .capetown does.

The main reason is because it is not intuitive. The .za suffix for “South Africa” does not make immediate sense for the online community. (The .sa domain belongs to Saudi Arabia, so we got stuck with .za, from the German “Zuid Afrika”.)

Second, the .za referent is too broad for activities, organizations or businesses that are based solely in the Mother City. These should enjoy a city TLD, matching their actual unique location, such as waterfront.capetown or myciti.capetown. The City, by applying for and adopting this virtual platform, would then be able to incentivize the local use of the .capetown brand in all digital communications.

As a community-building device, the .capetown domain would also allow people to proudly declare their membership in the metro. Businesses and organizations would gladly do so of their own volition, but the City could also democratize this possibility by offering every resident a free .capetown email account. Consider the impact: hundreds of thousands of emails each day would assert residents’ claims to the City. That would be a powerful statement of community.

Moreover, the .capetown domain promises greater commercial opportunities for local businesses and clients. Many companies already use the word “capetown” or “cpt” in their website URL, usually followed by .za. But the .capetown domain would render the overly-broad .za redundant.

Think about it: city TLDs make sense because cities provide the natural limits for most people’s everyday movements. It is in cities that people form communities, send their children to school, go to work and hang out with friends. It is also the natural unit for various work sectors, including the creative industries such as film production, graphic design and biomedical R&D. The .capetown domain makes better sense for most businesses as they operate from highly particular locales.

At some point in the future, when ICANN opens the application process again, other South African cities should seek their own domains, such as .joburg and .durban. But right now, the application process requires not only the support of each city’s governing authority and business community, but significant technical, administrative and financial capacity. ICANN’s requirements are formidable, guaranteeing that only the most far-sighted and administratively capable cities obtain them.

At this stage, due to the City’s energetic leadership and financial stability, Cape Town would likely be the only South African city that would be able to lodge a successful application.

Thus I urge Patricia de Lille and her team at the City of Cape Town to take advantage of this unique opportunity and apply for the .capetown domain. We would all benefit together from her decision to solidify Cape Town’s place in the digital age. With this act, she would confirm our status as the Gateway to Africa and promote our aspiration to be part of a globally connected citizenry.
Membership on the WhosWho Directory will be free to all Kenyan professionals.

There is so much opportunity in the Kenyan ccTLD namespace as far as available descriptive domains and relative lack of local content is concerned. With just 20,000 domains registered, you can build business around broad fields with the best domains available. So far, South African internet investors are smelling blood and grabbing Kenya's internet real estate. But you can't possibly compete against Napsers, can you? Still lots of unexplored verticals are available, IMHO. Like online travel, lead generation plus more. We only need to work hard and add a little imagination. And KENIC needs to lower prices for domain names :)

Naspers already has a successful online people directory in South Africa called Who is Who Southern Africa www.whoswhosa.co.za The Kenyan directory will be the second in Africa by the media giant and as expected, more roll out will follow soon in other key African internet markets like Ghana and Nigeria. Some clever guy may register whoswho.com.ng and whoswho.com.gh and make Napsers "share" the wealth :) LOL
Some other Internet media reports also mention that UniForum has received an 'endorsement from the AU' for the administration of the DotAfrica gTLD.

Most of these reports are quite misleading since a firm cannot be selected to administer a domain that has not yet been delegated, even as we understand the very impossibility of the African Union mainstreaming itself strategically within a particular proposal in a policy-oversight role whilst also playing the tactical role of a 'self-endorsing' entity in order to singularly control the fate of DotAfrica. It is therefore important to set the records straight in the global public interest

Against the backdrop that DCA already received the AU endorsement for DotAfrica since 2009, and despite several dishonest attempts to deny or invalidate and withdraw the endorsement through various acts of sabotage including using a forged letter of unknown provenance, DCA has remained steadfast and undaunted; and has continued with its independent promotional campaign in pursuit of its objective of applying for DotAfrica through the ICANN new gTLD programme, .

Therefore, DCA would like to issue this statement in reaction to these misleading and deceptive news reports that have been published (or 'planted') on Internet web sites with the sole objective of manipulating public opinion and giving false momentum to UniForum's DotAfrica application prospects.

1. We hereby denounce the entire exercise as illegitimate and all those who are party to it, including the members of the AU Task Force on DotAfrica, have participated in an act of illegality. In the not too distant future, they will all be called to account fully for their actions.

2. In addition to this public denunciation of a very illegitimate exercise that only gives credence to the fact that UniForum is now the principal beneficiary of wholesale illegality, we hereby warn any prospective collaborators not to associate themselves with this tainted process; and also use this opportunity to unequivocally warn SEDARI not to cooperate with them and allow itself to be used to render any strategic, technical, or registry management services advise in connection with the DotAfrica gTLD; but to stay away from this initiative, and not soil its international image in a corrupt process that we believe is already associated with the selection of UniForum. By openly announcing its cooperation with UniForum in this matter, we believe that SEDARI will be joining itself to illegality by cooperating with UniForum, and the expected benefits of such cooperation will pale in comparison to the reputational risk that it will suffer.

3. The Yes2DotAfrica Campaign had already identified many problems with the AU RFP in December 2011, and DCA has decided at a very early stage not to participate in the AU RFP process to select an operator for the DotAfrica registry. For this reason, Yes2DotAfrica will not accept any questionable endorsement or selection of UniForum that is the putative outcome of a flawed and illegitimate exercise.

If it is generally accepted that the DotAfrica gTLD does not belong to the African Union (AU) but to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), how could the AU legitimately select a registry operator for a gTLD that it does not own?

4. If the as yet un-delegated gTLD namespace rightfully belonged to the African Union, then ICANN would have given it to them following their official request in Dakar Senegal to have the DotAfrica name, and similar strings in any language included in the Top-Level Reserved Names List for their sole benefit. In our view, the ICANN Board's equable decision not to reserve this name for the AU was a total repudiation of the e-sovereignty concept. If ICANN by its very decision during the last quarter of 2011 not to reserve the DotAfrica name for the AU already determined, ipso facto, that the un-delegated DotAfrica gTLD does not belong to the African Union, why should we give any credence to the questionable selection of UniForum as the registry operator of DotAfrica in a process overseen by the AU DotAfrica Task Force acting under the aegis of the African Union?

5. We strongly believe that the AU is simply one stakeholder in a multi-stakeholder process, and cannot single-handedly outsource, or contract with any organization or participate in the process of selecting a registry operator for a DotAfrica gTLD that it does not own, nor is within its right to delegate. The AU cannot mainstream itself within a particular proposal and endorse the same proposal when it does not possess any sovereignty or ownership over DotAfrica gTLD as an Internet resource that belongs legally to ICANN.

6. We wish to inform the global public that the entire process was fraught with irregularities and injustice, favoritism and conflict of interest, when critically examined from every angle, completely falls short of the proper ethical standards of probity and accountability. First, the executives of UniForum SA had attempted to use Domain Names Services (Pty) Ltd. (DNS) (a company wholly owned by them) to perpetrate a questionable tie-up with Convergence Investment Partners (CIP) and consummate the formation of the African Registry Consortium (ARC), and when this was exposed by the Yes2DotAfrica Campaign as a potential BEE scam that reeked of rent-seeking and business opportunism, the ARC arrangement failed.

7. The question that we should all ask is: how did the executives of UniForum who had attempted the formation of ARC with the BEE Group, and when that effort failed due to lack of community support and AU endorsement, the same executives are now claiming in the media that they have been selected and endorsed by the AU to run the DotAfrica registry? It is quite obvious that these same management - and directors of DNS (Pty.) Ltd. - who failed in their potential BEE scam over ARC have now decided to run the gauntlet themselves and try to launder their image afresh with the African Union Commission. These people should be thoroughly investigated, and not lionized for having been illegitimately selected to operate a DotAfrica registry that is not within the powers of the African Union to delegate.

8. We believe that it is important to sensitize all those who believe in justice, truth, honesty and accountability all over the world to hold the AU up to the strictest ethical standards in this matter, and let them explain how this matter was handled that resulted in the selection of a discredited special interest group that comprises of potential BEE scammers and their cohorts in the AU DotAfrica Task Force, a Cabal that, following the failure of the ARC proposal ('Plan A'), is now using UniForum, a non-profit, as a convenient existing vehicle ('Plan B') to foster their illegitimate objectives with a view to gaining respectability before the global public.

9. We urge the AU Commission, as a respected inter-governmental organization, to act like ICANN whose gTLD programme activities in the global public interest compels it to be transparent and accountable in its transactions including recording and publishing every necessary information such as Board discussions and minutes for the consumption of the global public.

10. Therefore, we hereby challenge the African Union to act immediately in the greater interest of global public transparency and accountability, to release forthwith, the details of the EOI process and the RFP;

indicate which firms and organizations participated in it,

what they had each proposed;

how they were evaluated,

what merit-based system was employed in the evaluation of the respective proposals,

the relative scores obtained by each evaluated participant,

the final rankings and how the decision was arrived at to select UniForum South Africa as 'an African-based registry';

the final evaluation committee minutes that were taken during the meeting to decide on the selection,

the names of those who assented to those minutes;

the decision of the AU Tenders Board to approve the selection of UniForum S.A.

and the official signatories to that decision

and finally make a full disclosure of all these through a public media announcement.

11. We also call upon the ICANN Governmental Advisory Council (GAC) and all African governments including those represented at ICANN to hold the African Union Commission satisfy all these aspects of probity and insist that it conforms to these ideals of transparency and accountability over DotAfrica and make full disclosure as detailed under (10) above.

12. We reaffirm our faith in the ICANN-led process as the only transparent structure that we shall follow over DotAfrica, and insist that the eventual fate of DotAfrica can only be determined by ICANN, the only organization empowered to create DotAfrica and introduce it into the root zone of the Internet.

Until the application season is over, and all gTLD applications are subsequently evaluated and legitimate winners announced by ICANN, we believe that it is very premature for UniForum to presumptuously undertake any unnecessary self-promotion in the media that it has been selected to operate the DotAfrica registry by an inter-governmental organization that does not have the pertinent rights to the resource.

No one is fooled. Pride goeth before a fail. If UniForum had indeed been selected by the African Union, then a formal announcement should have been made by AU. In the absence of any such official confirmation, we think UniForum has simply been seeking cheap publicity whilst engaging in media manipulation.

13. We reiterate that the AU's selection of a registry operator for a gTLD resource that it does not own is legally problematic, and does not in any way constitute a legitimate endorsement, and, as we shall continue to demonstrate, these types of activities by UniForum and their cohorts within the AU DotAfrica Task Force only highlight the difficult road ahead for DotAfrica.

14. We hereby call on all the supporters of DCA in Africa and other continents and regions to remain steadfast and unperturbed, since we remain totally committed to this struggle for the achievement of an open and independent DotAfrica gTLD and keep it free from the clutches and sinister influence of the Cabal which intends to hijack it by any means necessary.

Having therefore issued this open warning to UniForum and the AU to beware of wrongdoing over DotAfrica, if the eventual delegation of DotAfrica is continuously delayed, or Africans are denied the opportunity of realizing their vision of having the first ever geographic TLD for the benefit of the people of the continent, history will record the role played by these two organizations in this matter for the harsh judgment of posterity. We also believe that the executives of UniForum S.A. will be severally and collectively called to account and will not be spared the same harsh judgment for whatever role they have played in this saga.

The harshest judgment will be reserved for the members of AU DotAfrica Task Force who inveigled the AU to deviate from the right path over DotAfrica. First, they preached the idea of uniting all Africans under a community-driven agenda, but have now turned around instead to promote a South African agenda that is now represented by UniForum and its self-serving executives.
The new rules came into effect on March 1st and the registry is now offering a Sunrise Period that will run for two months until May 1st to allow those with trademark(companies, major brands, establishments, copyright holders) and other prior rights to register .PT domains.

Previously, the ccTLD Registry allowed only registrants associated with companies or trademark rights to register .PT domains locking out thousands of individual users not associated with any company or brand but interested in acquiring .PT ccTLD domains and in the process hampering the growth of the ccTLD. By the end of December 2011, there were about 403,000 .PT ccTLD domains registered.
The game is certainly changing.”

Bhavin Turakhia, Founder of Radix, said ARI Registry Services was clearly the candidate for the project following an extensive evaluation process.

“Directi is well known for breeding and nurturing highly successful business models and our plans for the new Top-Level Domain program are no different,” Bhavin said. “We have set ambitious goals as part of this new Top-Level Domain project and as such we went to the market seeking a provider with the flexibility to handle our demanding business requirements and the technical capability to guarantee streamlined operation. We found many registry providers were not capable of adjusting their offerings to suit our unique project. This is why we selected ARI Registry Services for this project because their approach to business mirrors ours.”

“The exact TLD strings Radix will apply for with ARI Registry Services support will remain confidential until the May 1st public unveil."
