Bridge.co.za sold for impressive $17,500!

An impressive .co.za sale this week with Bridge.co.za  selling for $17,500 . COZA is becoming  is becoming really competitive and the value of domains in the namespace is going up. In a way, the market trend in South Africa is now mirroring that of Europe where the local ccTLD country codes outperform generic domains like .com .net by a huge factor and that's a good thing for the DNS industry in the country!  For the speculators, bridge.co.ke is available :)

Top web Hosting Companies in South Africa

Still my series on top webhosting companies in the various African  countries continues. South Africa is  the most vibrant market in Africa in terms of domain sales(668,000 domains sold in the co.za namespace alone) and the sheer number of internet startups! South Africa is a country where something is stirring, not just stirring but happening as far as web innovation is concerned.

It's no wonder then that South Africa has the most robust web hosting industry in Africa with hundreds of companies providing web hosting and nameserver services in the African economic powerhouse. Still based on Webhosting.info stats, we will track the top web hosting companies in South Africa based on the number of gTLD names(.com .co .net .info .org) hosted in South African servers. A more accurate measure could have been based on the .co.za names given that almost 700,000 .co.za domains have been registered but these stats still give us a general overview and an accurate prediction on the South African web hosting market:

WebDesign.co.za sold for $5000 to Durni Companies

We overlooked this domain in our last roundup of the biggest sales last week, probably because this was a private sale and was not sold on Sedo. The domain name WebDesign.co.za was sold to Gavin Durni's Durni Companies for a whopping $5000. Gavin Durni has invested heavily in the .co.za namespace and South Africa continues to shine in the domain aftermarkets along with Germany, UK and Colombia amongst the ccTLDs.
Dean Cannell
The domain was previously owned by Dean Cannell of Name Brand LLC, also of South Africa and a giant player in the South African .co.za domain namespace. The domain has a long history, was first registered in 1998 and has changed hands several times. We'll be monitoring this for you to see if Gavin will sell this domain or whether he has some internet real estate development plans up his sleeve. Watch this space.

Big Week for Sedo, Top African Domain Names Sold: okafrica.com and phuthumanathi.co.za

One thing we overlooked in the past but we will be including on this blog on a regular basis is weekly top sales of African theme domain names and ccTLDs in the International domain aftermarkets.
This week, total domain sales on Sedo alone were worth a whopping $860,000. Out of this, sales of the so called African theme domains accounted for just $5400.  Only two domain names were sold on Sedo that are relevant to our prevailing African theme.

The first one, was www.okafrica.com that fetched a respectable $3900. The new owner, whose privacy has been protected has not put up a website on the domain yet but we will monitor it closely to see what will be developed on the domain, we are expecting the owner has something worthwhile up their sleeves given the amount they have invested to acquire the domain name.

South Africa's .co.za's star continued shining on Sedo. Multichoice South Africa bought www.phuthumanathi.co.za domain for $1500 . Phuthuma Nathi Investments is the black owned company that owns 13.3% of Multichoice. In 2006, Phuthuma Nathi 1 and 2 acquired 13.3% stake or more of Multichoice South Africa in a BEE deal. PhuthumaNathi.com is still parked on Sedo and obviously the owner must be selling it at a premium given the million of rands in dividends that have been flowing into the pockets of the PhuthumaNathi wheeler dealers. PhuthumaNathi.co is also on sale for $2000 on Sedo.
