Google.SO or Google Somaaliya: Somalia gets a Google Search Domain

We recently wrote about the tremendous growth of the GMO Registry managed .SO country code top level domain name for Somalia; .SO (dotSO) is one of the fastest growing African ccTLD thanks to its nice sounding English extension (imagine.so ,travel.so, living.so) and its very open and liberal registration policy{anyone anywhere in the world can register a .so domain name} and it's also relatively affordable at about $25!

Google has now launched its .SO domain name, google.so ! The search engine stated on its blog: " For many, the first things that come to mind when thinking about Somalia are corruption, failed state, pirates, and in some cases, poetry & music. Little is said about the incredible demand for telecommunication services and Internet access in Somalia and throughout the diaspora.

Today, we thrilled to announce that Somali users now have a gateway to the world’s information through their own country domain,
www.google.so .

Local domains are a first step towards making the web more accessible and relevant for people around the world. The new domain will help people in Somalia and find locally relevant information, faster."

Google.so will now make it very easy for Somalis to browse the internet in their own language Somali as well as in English and Arabic. Somali is one of the most important languages in Africa spoken in the greater Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and the amongst the big Somali Diaspora living in Yemen and the greater Middle East, Europe and the United States. It's another good success for Somali speakers in the internet sphere given the success of the dotSO registry in launching a successful globally accepted ccTLD.
Google.SO :Google Somaaliya Translation Volunteers
As part of the Google Africa community translation program, the Somali language interface was translated entirely by volunteers and polished by a passionate group of native speakers, language specialists & journalists in Nairobi's Eastleigh Estate,or little Mogadishu. Eastleigh is a home for the Kenyan Somalis and the Somali diaspora and has become a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit of the community in spite of two decades of war and chaos.

African Domain Names blog Congratulates all the Somalis who participated in this program for putting their language on the digital map!
