Genious Communications, Morocco: Africa gets fifth ICANN Accredited Registrar

Morocco's Genious Communications is Africa's fifth ICANN accredited Registrar after Internet Solutions of South Africa, Kheweul of Senegal, AfriRegister S.A. of Burundi and Ghana Dot Com of Ghana. Africa's Domain Industry is picking up, step by step.

Genious Communications core business is in domain name registration, website hosting, graphics design and web design with most of its clients based in Middle East, Morocco, Spain and France. The Moroccan registrar which has partnered with America's eNom hosts over 4000 domain names and websites.

The market of domain names and hosting in Morocco has been booming in the recent years due to several factors. According to the Moroccan Telcoms regulatory authority ANRT (Agence Nationale de Réglementation des Télécoms), the number of domain names under the Morocco's ccTLD .ma, exceeded the threshold of 30,000 records. This figure, in a sharp increase does not include the domain names registered under the generic Top Level Domain names (.com, .net, .org...). This alone makes Morocco amongst the top 3 biggest markets for domain names in Africa.

The dynamics of the Moroccan market stems from the exponential growth of Internet and computer equipment. Morocco now has over 800,000 internet subscribers, 8 million users and registers the sale of more than 120,000 computers per year.

The democratization of the prices of the .ma Moroccan ccTLD domain names is another explanatory factor for this growth. Nowadays, to buy a domain name in Morocco under the ". Ma", the customer pays annually $30 ex VAT, against $15 ex VAT for the generic Top Level Domain Names .com, .net or .org. This makes .ma one of the cheapest ccTLDs in Africa, a huge success factor.
