Highway Africa Conference 2011 to Cover new gTLDs

This year's Highway Africa Conference to be held in from  17th-19th September, 2011 in Cape Town South Africa will cover ICANN's new gTLD program. The conference organizers have included a workshop for new gTLDs  and what's in it for journalists and media practitioners in Africa. Rachel Inne, the regional liaison for Africa will give a talk on new gTLDs to ICT Journalists and media practitioners from all over the African continent.
The 15th edition of the Highway Africa conference, running from 17th – 19th September, offers a wide range of workshops and training programmes, dealing with different issues around the theme African Media and the Global Sustainability Challenge.  These workshops will seek to equip African journalists with information on the challenges brought by climate change and how African media can aid in framing this issue to the world, also using Information Communication Technologies (ICTs).

Some of the diverse topics to be covered include the following:
  • Covering the Climate Change Story
  • Online Mapping in the News Room
  • The  Other Sustainability Challenge-Revitalizing Reporting on HIV and AIDS
  • ICANN will look at the New gTLDs(generic Top Level Domains) and what is in it for journalists and the media.
  • Debate on Mobile Convergence: The future of Communication is here
Highway Africa is a partnership between Rhodes University (School of Journalism and Media Studies) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), with the support of several partners, development agencies and sponsors.

For fourteen years the Highway Africa conference has been at the centre of Africa’s debates on journalism and new media. The conference has over the years become the largest annual gathering of African journalists in the world.
