.XXX Landrush Commences today; will the porn industry in Africa buy in?

ICM Registry kicks off the .XXX landrush today following the Sunrise, which was successful. This is not my demographic or domain so I don't follow events here very closely although sometimes, I stop to have a look on how the roll out of this new gTLD is proceeding. .XXX is going to be successful , no doubt about that, sex always sells.

Porn was once an alien thing in pious Africa, it was the abominable!  Then Africans started watching foreign porn, then they started acting in foreign porn, then they started producing African porn and selling on DVDs. Then they got online! In fact most internet traffic was and is still driven by porn.

In the streets of Nairobi for example, a vibrant porn industry thrives(am told), with "productions" going on on a daily basis. Porn produced in local languages has proved especially quite popular. And that porn is getting online too, with several websites now offering videos, photos, text etc of local porn. It's a booming industry and it's making those miscreants lots of cash.

Will the African porn industry adopt .XXX domains? I will be speaking on grounds am familiar with. Following a misinformed threat by the Kenyan government to block .XXX, many players in the industry will likely shy away from this "adult" domain. We're still to get any clarification from the Kenyan government on the rationale or details of its declaration as this is an "ongoing debate" that will never end. In my opinion, I think it might have been a sensational statement that was not well thought through. Sort of a "roadside declaration" that is to be filled up with policy details and justification later.

The Landrush is a restricted 17-day period set aside for members of the adult Sponsored Community who want to secure premium .XXX domain names, guaranteeing them the chance to either buy them outright or to participate in a closed mini-auction where they can bid for them.

Unlike the General Availability, the Landrush is not administered on a first come, first served basis, thereby guaranteeing anyone applying for an available domain name the chance to obtain it. At the end of the Landrush period, domain names with only one application will be simply awarded, while those with two or more applications will proceed to a closed mini-auction between the respective applicants. For those in the adult industry in Kenya, this could be the time to take the bull by its owns and defend your rights to any domain, if you are bold enough  to show your true face.
