.PT ccTLD Domain Registration Liberalization comes into force

Portugal's ccTLD Registry Operator FCCN has began implementing new rules that will allow users to easily register .PT domain without being associated with a company or brand from May 1st this year. The new rules came into effect on March 1st and the registry is now offering a Sunrise Period that will run for two months until May 1st to allow those with trademark(companies, major brands, establishments, copyright holders) and other prior rights to register .PT domains.

Previously, the ccTLD Registry allowed only registrants associated with companies or trademark rights to register .PT domains locking out thousands of individual users not associated with any company or brand but interested in acquiring .PT ccTLD domains and in the process hampering the growth of the ccTLD. By the end of December 2011, there were about 403,000 .PT ccTLD domains registered.
