ICANN 42 Dakar Website is Up, Africa Welcomes ICANN again

ICANN Singapore has been a huge turning point in the history of the internet with the approval of the newgTLD program which now opens the door for hundreds of applications starting in January 2012. In March, the ICANN board set Dakar as the site for ICANN's 42nd and final meeting before the commencement of the  newTLD application rounds. The ICANN 42 Dakar website is already up and the event already has some sponsors including Public Internet Registry(.ORG), Germany's InternetX, China Internet Network Information Centre, IronDNS and NIC.ru.

The last ICANN meeting in Africa took place in Nairobi and proved to be great success in spite of some unfounded fears. This year, ICANN was worried about persistent demonstrations by labour unions and activists in Senegal; a concern that was quickly dismissed by Senegal's ICT Director at Ministry of Post, Telecommunications and ICT Ms Ndeye Maimouna DIOP :
"We are working on doing our best to succeed on organization of this meeting. About demonstrations; Senegal is a democracy and our constitutions allow all Senegalese to demonstrate if he wants'
You can imagine that because of ICANN's meeting, we will not suspend our
freedom or expression." She stated.

We will keep our readers updated with latest  news on ICANN 42 Dakar and as always , we wish the organizers a great success in convening this landmark event and putting Africa on the digital map.
