Why South Africa is .za

Yes, South Africa's ccTLD is .za for Zouth Africa! :) Why not .SA?

There was an Old South Africa and there is a New South Africa

South Africa was once ruled by an Afrikaner minority who 'Afrikanized' the country through a system of apartheid or 'separate development' a code word for white supremacist rule. The official languages for South Africa for much of the twentieth Century was Dutch and English and later(1961?) Afrikaans and English and the country's name was called Suid-Afrika in Afrikaans or Zuid-Afrika in Dutch. Yes, now you know where that ineradicable South African accent comes from :)

Even its airline was called Suid Afrikaanse Lugdiens and many streets, towns and cities had  and many still have Afrikaner(an African version of Dutch) names such as Stellenbosch.

For some reason,(perhaps because Dutch was the official language before 1961), the ISO gave the nation the two letter ISO 3166-1 code ZA for the Dutch version of the name Zuid Afrika instead of the SA for Afrikaner Suid-Afrika version thus opening the way for Saudi Arabia to grab the more intuitive SA. It is this name, ZA that was assigned by IANA as the country code top level domain for South Africa and later delegated by ICANN to an internet association in the country to manage as the country's ccTLD.

When ANC came to power in 1994, the "damage" had already been done and amongst ANC's many Africanization and BEE programs .ZA was never on the menu and has been eventually embraced by the 'Rainbow nation' as their proud identifier and a reminder of dark legacy that was hopefully and inevitably dismantled when Apartheid was shot in the heart in 1994.

South Africa: .ORG.ZA Policy Development Workshop Scheduled for October

A policy development workshop of the members of .ZA Domain Name Authority (ZADNA) will be convened on 4th, 2011 for the .org.za namespace, South Africa's domain space for non-commercial organisations, including but not limited to charities, NGOs, Section 21 companies, trade and industry associations, trade unions, political parties and religious organisations.

The purpose of the workshop is to address challenges facing the org.za administrator regarding the use of org.za domain names to run commercial websites, and the eligibility of certain organisations to register org.za domain names.

The org.za administrator first proposed amendments to the org.za terms and conditions (“the org.za policy”) in late 2009. Following a ZADNA public consultation process which closed in February 2010, the proposed changes did not receive any support and were subsequently not implemented.

The org.za administrator is now seeking clarity and guidance from ZADNA due to increasing challenges concerning eligibility to register org.za domain names and the use thereof for commercial purposes. ZADNA invited its members and the South African public to attend the workshop and provide input before ZADNA makes a final decision on the new .ORG.ZA T&C. .The ORG.ZA domain space is administered by Internet Solutions.

FurnitureRemoval.co.za sold for $1666

Another big sale for a South African Domain name on Sedo. FurnitureRemoval.co.za has been sold for $1666. South African domain industry has less than 10 domainers accounting for most of the activity in the .co.za namespace. The domain was bought by Durni Companies from Sterling Web Solutions. More activity from the .co.za namespace coming mid this month.

The mystery of za.co.za

Adapted from .co.za Domains. Article by Hans Christian
Domains $7.49 - Why Pay More?
Follow the interesting email communication thread between Hans Christian and Uniforum's Sipho Xaba. {Uniforum is the nonprofit that operates the .za, cctLD for South Africa} If someone has a good clue to the mystery, I would like to know too.

The domain name za.co.za appears to be available, yet all registration attempts are ignored. I asked Uniforum why.

If you check the whois record for za.co.za one's told that the domain is available for registration. I've tried to register the domain several times over the last couple of years without success so this time I decided to ask Uniforum's support.

subject za.co.za

Hello,

is there any reason why za.co.za cannot be registered, please?
It shows up as available on whois.co.za but registration requests
appear to be ignored. Is that on purpose?

Best regards,
Hans

Good Day

You can not register a TLD (Top Level Domain name) ZA refers to
all South African domain names registered. i;e co.za, org.za or ac.za
etc. You can see that all these TLD refersto South Africa at the end.

Thanks for your reply Sipho,

I'm not sure I understood entirely though :) So you're saying one
cannot register za.co.za because za is also the TLD for SA? I'd like
to register the domain za.co.za which isn't really any different from
ab.co.za or example.co.za. It's just a two letter domain under .co.za.

So it's not a technical but an administrative restriction? I just find it
odd that whois states that it is available
http://whois.co.za/cgi-bin/whois.sh?Domain=za
After all net.co.za, com.com, net.net are all valid domains too, so
za.co.za should not be any different.

Sorry to keep asking, but I'd really like to understand it.

Best regards,
HC

within the Co.ZA system.
