ZANIC: The Other South African "Domain Registry"

If you are not satisfied with range of services offered by the various second level domain namespaces under South Africa's Domain Registry, ZADNA, perhaps you can secure some good "South African" domains under the pseudo Top Level Domains za.org and za.net run by an organization called ZANIC.

Registrations are open to residents of South Africa only and the domains are free; like in .co.za you need nameservers before applying for domain registration. List of restricted domains include South African second level domains namespaces, all ISO 3166-1 two letter codes, one letter characters.

Domains are free and the registry claims it has registered some 30,000 domains. For a free pseudo Top Level Domain name, the ZANIC namespaces are quite well developed with several businesses and organizations using za.net and za.org domains. Several za.net and za.org have been developed into popular websites, showing the domain namespaces have gained a level of acceptance amongst some South Africans who missed out on great .co.za .org.za .com .org .net domains.

CentralNIC has a similar business model with over 20 pseudo TLDs including gr.com gb.com  de.com us.com domains offering alternatives to ccTLDs. CentralNIC also owns za.com domain although currently it redirects to CentralNIC website.

Domains.co.za : South Africa's First Domain Registrar to launch Domain Registration Platform

South African ISP DiaMatrix will this week launch the domains.co.za platform, a white labelled Multi Registrar / Reseller EPP Control Panel that will enable users to successfully register new domain names and manage existing domain names using Uniforum's new EPP Solution.

The platform will also allow domain registrars and resellers that have not yet been accredited by Uniforum to become .co.za registrars through the Domains.co.za control panel without going through the painful process of developing their own EPP solutions. The Domains.co.za platform was developed in the last 18 months in conjunction with Uniforum.

Last year, DiaMatrix became South Africa's first Domain Registrar after integrating into Uniforum's .co.za EPP(Extensible Provisioning Protocol) system. The EPP system is an internationally adopted standard used by many domain registries globally and provides a simpler and more secure means of domain administration. South Africa's co.za registry Uniforum has been using the legacy email based domain name registration system but this will be phased out in the near future.

Uniforum recently incorporated an EPP system will allow registrars access to the EPP  system after being accredited. Registrars will have to pass a lengthy and stringent evaluation and approval process, that Diamatrix has already passed to become South Africa's first true domain registrar. For years, South Africans have been buying domains directly from .co.za registry, Uniforum, through its archaic email domain registration system, a situation that forced many users to resort to the various ISPs for assistance with domain registration and management which subsequently led to higher costs and various domain disputes, particularly on Whois information. In many cases, ISPs register domains on behalf of clients, but using their(ISPs') details.

The DiaMatrix’s multi-registrar, multi-reseller system will allow all ISPs and co.za domain holders to become registrars through Domains.co.za within 24-hours. The platform will be launched later this week. Interesting developments in the .co.za namespace.

Reblog: Top Search Engine Optimization, SEO, Companies in South Africa Ranked

A reblog from SEOblog.co.za, great insight into the top SEO Companies in South Africa.

With the current climate of the online world we all know that SEO is of the utmost importance to the success of a company, especially online. That being said, South Africa’s SEO industry, although a little behind the rest of the world, has sprung to life in recent years with more and more companies entering the competitive market of SEO.
We at SEOBlog have created our own ranking system known as SEOScore – a scoring system which we applied to some of the top SEO companies in South Africa. To qualify for SEOScore, there are certain rules and criteria that have to be met. Once this is determined, a range of specific keywords is used to test rankings in Google. Read below to see how various companies ranked and scored once the method was applied.

The Results

* Based on 15 August 2011 rankings
Download the full WebCeo results here

Additional Results

Below is a table of how each company performed based on the 15 selected keywords. For example, quirk.biz ranked in the top 30 for nine out of the 15 selected keywords.

The following graph shows the exact rankings for each company based on keywords.

Criteria

We checked to make sure that each website met the criteria:
  • Companies are ranked on keywords gathered from the Google Adwords keyword tool, according to the most popular keywords in the SEO and paid advertising industry.
  • WebCeo was used to determine the rankings.
  • We also used WebCeo’s Ranking Score to gather the overall score for each company.

The Method

The score is made up of your position for the 15 keywords listed below. We chose these keywords based on the amount of searches done on them according to the Adword keyword tool. We also took into account the most commonly used keywords within the online marketing industry.
Keyword Search Volume
seo 60500
search engine optimization 18100
search optimization 18100
internet marketing 14800
ppc 14800
search engine optimisation 14800
search engine marketing 8100
online marketing 6600
pay per click 6600
seo company 5400
seo services 4400
ppc pay per click 3600
seo consultants 3600
search engine optimization companies 1000
search engine marketing company 4400
Then we used WebCeo’s Ranking Score with search results set to Google South Africa, and weight set to 10, to determine the final score.
The weight is a setting that WebCeo uses to determine the importance of a certain ranking or search engine. For the weight of the rankings we used WebCeo’s default settings:

This gives us the ability to set a certain weight for all keywords ranking between one and 30 and each position will have a certain score of importance. Below you can see the formula WebCeo uses to determine the scores. This was also left on default:

Rules

There were certain rules that we had to have in place for the ranking of SEOScore:
  • The company must be based in and have an office in South Africa.
  • The company needs to rank for at least two main SEO terms to qualify.

As you can see from the results – after applying the rules using guidelines and WebCeo, the top three companies are R.O.I. Media, Synergize and SEO Rankings. These results reflect how well each company ranked in Google with the respective keywords that were selected.

Every three months SEOBlog will be redoing SEOScore to see where SA’s top SEO companies are ranking in Google. The question is: who can knock R.O.I. Media, who won by some margin this time around, out of their position? Well done… enjoy your unofficial Google award!

Top web Hosting Companies in South Africa

Still my series on top webhosting companies in the various African  countries continues. South Africa is  the most vibrant market in Africa in terms of domain sales(668,000 domains sold in the co.za namespace alone) and the sheer number of internet startups! South Africa is a country where something is stirring, not just stirring but happening as far as web innovation is concerned.

It's no wonder then that South Africa has the most robust web hosting industry in Africa with hundreds of companies providing web hosting and nameserver services in the African economic powerhouse. Still based on Webhosting.info stats, we will track the top web hosting companies in South Africa based on the number of gTLD names(.com .co .net .info .org) hosted in South African servers. A more accurate measure could have been based on the .co.za names given that almost 700,000 .co.za domains have been registered but these stats still give us a general overview and an accurate prediction on the South African web hosting market:

BeautySchools.co.za sold for $2950

The domain beautyschools.co.za was bought by Durni Companies on Sedo for $2950 from Nokta Media, a Turkish Company. The domain is currently parked on Sedo and might be for sale by Gavin Durni's Durni Companies LLC. Durni Companies has been behind the recent big sales of the .co.za domain names on Sedo recently. We will keep track on this domain to see whether it will change hands again soon.

WebDesign.co.za sold for $5000 to Durni Companies

We overlooked this domain in our last roundup of the biggest sales last week, probably because this was a private sale and was not sold on Sedo. The domain name WebDesign.co.za was sold to Gavin Durni's Durni Companies for a whopping $5000. Gavin Durni has invested heavily in the .co.za namespace and South Africa continues to shine in the domain aftermarkets along with Germany, UK and Colombia amongst the ccTLDs.
Dean Cannell
The domain was previously owned by Dean Cannell of Name Brand LLC, also of South Africa and a giant player in the South African .co.za domain namespace. The domain has a long history, was first registered in 1998 and has changed hands several times. We'll be monitoring this for you to see if Gavin will sell this domain or whether he has some internet real estate development plans up his sleeve. Watch this space.

Big Week for Sedo, Top African Domain Names Sold: okafrica.com and phuthumanathi.co.za

One thing we overlooked in the past but we will be including on this blog on a regular basis is weekly top sales of African theme domain names and ccTLDs in the International domain aftermarkets.
This week, total domain sales on Sedo alone were worth a whopping $860,000. Out of this, sales of the so called African theme domains accounted for just $5400.  Only two domain names were sold on Sedo that are relevant to our prevailing African theme.

The first one, was www.okafrica.com that fetched a respectable $3900. The new owner, whose privacy has been protected has not put up a website on the domain yet but we will monitor it closely to see what will be developed on the domain, we are expecting the owner has something worthwhile up their sleeves given the amount they have invested to acquire the domain name.

South Africa's .co.za's star continued shining on Sedo. Multichoice South Africa bought www.phuthumanathi.co.za domain for $1500 . Phuthuma Nathi Investments is the black owned company that owns 13.3% of Multichoice. In 2006, Phuthuma Nathi 1 and 2 acquired 13.3% stake or more of Multichoice South Africa in a BEE deal. PhuthumaNathi.com is still parked on Sedo and obviously the owner must be selling it at a premium given the million of rands in dividends that have been flowing into the pockets of the PhuthumaNathi wheeler dealers. PhuthumaNathi.co is also on sale for $2000 on Sedo.

Domainers in Africa: Garvin Durni

Africa needs some inspirational stories on domaining success; the attitude so far has been that of domaining is a Western business, the internet dynamics in Africa are not sufficient to sustain the "sophisticated" domaining industry. Very few African ccTLDs make it to the domain aftermarkets apart from South Africa's .co.za. This means that businesses in Africa still have not grasped the value of domain names in e-marketing/e-commerce, in lowering your adwords campaign budgets and the effort and budgets you put in SEO, in giving you very quality and relevant traffic almost from nowhere!

Gavin Durni
There are people in Africa who have built successful domaining businesses and this week I will profile a guy from South Africa, Gavin Durni. South Africa is always a country of great inspiration. It brings the feeling of possibility, it's possible! As the brand campaign says. If it can be done in the developed world, then it can be done in South Africa; if it can be done in South Africa then it can be done in the rest of Africa.Simple as that. It's possible. Gavin Durni has built a successful domaining business down South specializing in the .co.za namespace. His company Durni Companies LLC was formed in 2006 and its internet operations specialize in monetizing direct navigation traffic from domain name portfolios by means of pay-per-click advertising. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, in 2010, Gavin sold fly.co.za for $65,000, the biggest .co.za sale ever reported. he has also wrapped up some 5 figure domain sales in .co.za

Gavin's specialties are in domain name monetization, domain name acquisition, SEO, web development, e-commerce, PPC advertising, Adwords Campaign Management and Conversion Tracking according to his Linked In Profile, skills, many will tell you, are requisite for a successful domaining business.

Durni Companies,LLC is one of the biggest players in the .co.za domains in South Africa. It's important to note that Durni has focused on the .co.za domains instead of the beaten path of the .coms. This could be due to the stature of the .co.za whose value has been on the rise in the last few years and the availability of generic domain names that were still available in the .co.za domains. They are also quite cheap and can be acquired for as low as $10 unlike other African ccTLDs with the 'ridiculosity' of their prices, regulations and restrictions. It's impractical for African Domainers to for example build successful domaining businesses around domains that cost upwards of $90 per domain, that's ridiculous!

"Domain name registration is a leading indicator in terms of internet economy growth of a registry. These are all very attractive factors when it comes to domain development and acquisition; it is actually becoming very difficult to buy premium domains for good prices which is a direct indication of supply and demand. This has also attracted many speculators to the market, as well as international venture capital money to start up internet businesses in South Africa.” Durni said in an earlier interview with mybroadband.co.za

“Most domain research and selection is based on keyword research and keyword value, which is based on factors such as local search volume and the industry the keyword or domain name pertains to.” Durni said that they monetize their domain names by selling advertising on them as well as developing them into websites and partnering with others to create businesses.

“The real value being the SEO and the ability to rank quickly in search engine rankings to reduce pay-per-click and other online advertising budgets. Once websites have been developed, we either continue to run these as businesses or sell them off.” he said.

Durni's Advice: “Having a very specific search term pertaining to your business is essential to SEO, which leads to more traffic, more leads, more sales, and thus more business.”

I think Durni's example should be  a good case study for building successful business in the domain industry although my heart goes to those aspiring African domainers living in countries with stupid ccTLD regimes, countries I will not mention for now. But there is a lot of promise in the Kenyan ccTLD market, if only KENIC could lower the prices of the .co.ke a little bit! Kenyans owning those generic keyword domain names should also consider parking or listing those domains on Sedo, you never know who might approach you with the offer of a lifetime. Nigeria also looks good as well as Somalia's .SO although it's relatively new and might take some few years before search engines build some trust in the ccTLD. South Africans are much better placed to build successful domaining businesses but watch out for Kenya; it will be Africa's next rising star! Another future option will be the dotafrica Domain that's being led by DotConnectAfrica, which will be a domain name for the entire African continent.

Next week, I will profile more Africans who have built successful domaining businesses.

Welcome to the African Domain Names Blog

Welcome to my  African Domain Names Blog. The last few weeks have been weeks of self discovery and exploration about the future of the internet, the place of Africa in this future internet, my place in it; the place of African Businesses and organizations.

I have realized that through negligence and lack of foresight, I had neglected a key area in the internet that would have made me a serious internet player a long time ago, the area of African Domain names! What do Africans from Dakar to Nairobi, Cairo to Cape Town search on the web? After five years of serious internet networking, all I have to show for it is a thousand Twitter followers, a few less serious Facebook friends who 'like' every updates I make and all they to say is LOL! Of course I value the true and timeless friendships that I have made through social media, the impact I have made through my conversations with people, the connections, the ideas, the discovery .It has been a blessing and a privilege. One that my parents only dreamed of. But now I have to move on!

I am moving on to the world of African domain names! The buying, the parking, the reselling. The high adrenaline world of domaining. I have been in touch with several top domainers; I have read Morgan Linton, Andrew Alleman,  Frank Schilling; I believe there is still room for one more in this exciting and broad new world of domaining, especially when I am to compete in my niche. I have staked my savings on this new venture, no doubt I will make mistakes but I intend to learn from them. Ignoring this rich real estate on the web has been the curse of Africa. Few African countries ever take domain names seriously and even fewer will register domains to defend their brands. I would like to demystify the world of domaining by starting from scratch and rising through the learning curve into meaningful monetization. As Brenda Lee sang some decades ago, "mistakes are part of being young". This way, I hope more African entrepreneurs will take domaining more seriously from watching me do it.

And I have a solemn promise to the global internet community: I intend to bring new ideas, passion and quality to the internet. I intend to develop useful and quality content for the benefit of everyone and not me. I will steer clear of cybersquatting and the violation of trademark rights. For those who have not yet crossed the Rubicon on whether to be domainers, join me on this journey of discovery; come share my excitement and enthusiasm and let us own the internet, we the idealists who would like to make some cash! So with a ton of ideas and enthusiasm and $100 in my pocket, let us embark on the journey of discovery!!!
